This volume publishes two large articles in German written by D. and U. Mania. Both have rich illustrations: maps, stratigraphic sections, drawings of stone and bone artefacts. The first paper gives a detailed analysis of bone tools made by Homo erectus uncovered at the world famous Bilzingsleben site, south-east Germany, with 65 figures. The second study comprises a monograph-like synthesis of the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic of the Middle Elbe and Saale region. D. Manias paper deals with the stratigraphy, ecology and archaeology of the sites, including Bilzingsleben and Schöningen, between 450,000 to 50,000 years BP.
