Our Words Put to Paper

The St. Lawrence Island Yupik population, sitting between the US and Russia, has borrowed culturally and linguistically from both. Here, the combining of historical documents with present day elders stories bridges memories with traditional knowledge never previously shared in writing. It deals with such topics as: pre-Christian festivals, birth and death rituals, famines and epidemics and reindeer herding, among many others.
